NRC Records ₦1.95bn Passenger Revenue In Q1 2025

National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) generated ₦1.95 billion in passenger revenue during the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.

Gatekeepers News reports that the latest figure represents a 37.36% increase compared to ₦1.42 billion recorded in the same period of 2024.

The data was contained in the NBS rail transportation report released on October 5, highlighting steady growth across passenger, cargo, and ancillary income streams.

According to the report, 929,553 passengers traveled via the rail network between January and March 2025 — a 37.65% rise from the 675,293 passengers transported in Q1 2024.

In terms of freight movement, 181,520 tons of goods were transported during the quarter, up from 160,650 tons recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The bureau further disclosed that ₦657.03 million was earned from goods and cargo conveyance, representing an 8.19% increase from ₦607.32 million in Q1 2024.

In addition, other receipts amounted to ₦115.68 million, indicating a rise of 355.39% in Q1 2025 compared to ₦25.40 million received in Q1 2024.

NBS also provided comparative data for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024, showing that 1,037,113 passengers used the rail system — a 54.29% increase from 672,198 passengers in Q4 2023.

Passenger revenue in that quarter reached ₦1.92 billion, up from ₦1.07 billion recorded in the same period of 2023.

However, income from cargo transportation declined slightly, with ₦391.64 million earned in Q4 2024 — a 7.46% drop compared to ₦423.22 million in Q4 2023.

Additionally, ₦8.93 million was collected for transporting 1,260 tons of goods through pipelines, while other receipts climbed to ₦434.44 million, reflecting a 10.34% increase from ₦393.72 million recorded in Q4 2023.
