One Injured As Suspected Drug Traffickers Attack NDLEA And Army Operatives

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Army were attacked by suspected drug traffickers in Ukpuje, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Gatekeepers News reports that Mitchel Ofoyeju, the NDLEA Commander in Edo, confirmed the incident in a statement issued after the joint operation, which took place in the early hours of October 27.

Ofoyeju said the operatives came under heavy gunfire while advancing into the community as part of efforts to dismantle large cannabis farms in the area.

“The officers came under intense gunfire from drug cultivators and traffickers as they advanced into Ukpuje,” he said.

He explained that the security team returned fire briefly before making a tactical withdrawal to prevent further casualties.

“One of our officers sustained injuries after being struck by a sharp object during the confrontation but has since received medical attention and is now stable,” Ofoyeju said.

The NDLEA commander commended the joint team for their professionalism and vowed that the agency would not relent in its mission to eliminate illegal drug operations in the state.

“We are thankful that no life was lost. This incident will not discourage us from pursuing our mandate to cleanse Edo State of narcotics,” he stated.

Ofoyeju described Ukpuje as one of Nigeria’s major drug-producing areas and said the raid formed part of the NDLEA’s broader strategy to combat cannabis cultivation and trafficking in Edo.

“We will intensify operations in drug-prone zones like Ukpuje and ensure that those behind these criminal networks are brought to justice,” he said.

He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to continued collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to restore safety and order in the state.

Ofoyeju called on community leaders and residents to support the agency by providing useful intelligence on illegal drug activities.

“Community cooperation is key. Together, we can build a safer, drug-free Edo State,” he added.
