Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026, attributing the decision to growing security threats linked to the misuse of vehicles.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement released on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the move followed an internal assessment of recent crime patterns and the need to strengthen public safety nationwide.
Hundeyin explained that contrary to speculations, there is no court injunction preventing the police from enforcing laws regulating the use of tinted vehicle windows.
He said the earlier suspension of enforcement in October was a voluntary decision by the force to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their permits.
Hundeyin clarified that there is no court order restraining the police from enforcing the tinted glass law, noting that the earlier suspension of enforcement in October was a voluntary step taken by the force.
According to the police, recent crime trends show that unauthorised tinted glass is increasingly being used by criminal elements to conceal their identities and facilitate offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent acts.
Hundeyin also quoted the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as assuring Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be carried out professionally, within the limits of the law and with respect for citizens’ rights.
He advised motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through approved channels ahead of the enforcement date to avoid sanctions, stressing that compliance will help improve security and reduce abuse of the policy.
