Sunday Katung, senator representing Kaduna South, has defected from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gatekeepers News reports that his defection was confirmed on Wednesday during plenary when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Katung’s resignation letter on the floor of the upper chamber.
Katung had earlier disclosed his decision on social media on November 1. In the letter, the senator said his resignation from the PDP took effect from October 31, 2025.
The senator stated, “I wish to formally confirm my decision to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with effect from 31st day of October 2025.”
He noted that the move followed careful reflection, adding that he had remained committed to democratic values, good governance and public service, which he said the PDP once represented.
Katung said, “However, evolving political realities within our nation and my constituency have necessitated a re-evaluation of the platform called PDP and the best platform suited for me to advance my aspiration of taking care of my people and their welfare.”
He explained that after extensive consultations with stakeholders, supporters and other Nigerians, he chose to align with what he described as a progressive party offering renewed hope to citizens.
According to him, APC’s leadership and direction promote inclusiveness, stability and sustainable development.
The senator said, “My decision is guided solely to serve my constituents and the nation meaningfully”, adding that no politician would willingly undermine his political future.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities he received during his time in the party and wished it success going forward.
Following the reading of the letter, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele escorted Katung alongside APC senators to Senate President Akpabio for a group photograph.
The Kaduna lawmaker was thereafter guided to his seat on the majority side of the chamber.
