Tinubu Seeks Extension Of 2025 Budget Implementation To March 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the House of Representatives to approve an extension of 2025 budget implementation timeline to March 31, 2026.

Gatekeepers News reports that the request was contained in a letter dated December 18 and addressed to the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.

The president explained that the extension would allow for fuller release and utilisation of capital funds by ministries, departments, and agencies.

He also transmitted the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bills to the House for legislative consideration, noting that the proposals were designed to reflect revised fiscal realities and improve budget performance.

According to Tinubu, the adjustment is part of broader fiscal reforms aimed at ending the practice of running multiple overlapping budgets.

He said the move would strengthen planning, execution, and accountability in government spending, while ensuring transparency and adherence to constitutional appropriation procedures.

The president added that the bills include measures to tighten implementation discipline, such as limiting the use of appropriated funds strictly to approved purposes, restricting fund transfers without National Assembly approval, and requiring periodic reporting on fund releases and agency revenues.

He noted that the new submission replaces an earlier one dated December 16, 2025, and urged lawmakers to consider the bills expeditiously.
