Wilfred Ndidi has been appointed as the new captain of Super Eagles, marking a leadership transition for Nigeria’s senior men’s national team.

Gatekeepers News reports that the experienced midfielder steps into the role following the exit of long-serving leaders William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa.

Ndidi, who has previously served as vice-captain, was officially handed the armband after the team’s arrival in Morocco and their first training session ahead of the tournament.

Addressing the team’s media, Ndidi described the appointment as a major responsibility and stressed the importance of unity within the squad as Nigeria prepares for the continental showpiece.

He said, “It’s a huge responsibility”, adding that “with the help of the players, everything will go smoothly.

Ndidi added, “I’ve had conversations with a couple of players, just some of the older players, to try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. We also need support from the staff. We’re all in this together.”

Nigeria heads into AFCON 2025 seeking to restore confidence after missing out on qualification for 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ndidi said the tournament presents an opportunity for the team to respond positively and reconnect with fans.

Hee said, “It was a sad one missing out on the World Cup, but this is another opportunity. Another day, another opportunity to correct the wrongs, put smiles on faces of Nigerians, and make the country proud once again.”

“It’s not going to be an easy task, but we’re really up for it. We look forward to enjoying it together.”
