FRSC: Speeding Truck Causes Fatal Crash And Claims 12 Lives

No fewer than 12 people have been killed and three others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Yangoji–Abuja corridor in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Gatekeepers Newreports that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Segun Ogungbemide, on Sunday. According to the agency, the crash occurred at about 11:45 a.m. in the Gada Biyu area.

Ogungbemide said the accident involved four vehicles — a commercial trailer conveying coal, a commercial bus and two commercial cars.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicate that the crash was caused by excessive speeding and dangerous driving on the part of the trailer driver.

“Further investigation revealed that the truck driver was driving at an excessive speed beyond the prescribed limit for the corridor, lost control and rammed into already parked vehicles, leading to the fatal crash,” the statement said.

A total of 18 persons were involved in the accident. Five victims died instantly at the scene, while seven others who were rescued and taken to hospital later succumbed to their injuries.

The FRSC spokesperson added that three other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, including bruises, cuts, fractures and head injuries, and are currently receiving medical attention.
