Simon Mwadkwon, a former Senate minority leader and ex-senator for Plateau North, has left Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gatekeepers News reports that the former lawmaker announced his move on Thursday when he visited APC elders in Barkin Ladi local government area of Plateau State.
Speaking during the meeting, Mwadkwon said, “I am here to formally announce my entry into the APC and to seek the counsel of party elders at the grassroots.”
He explained that the decision came after wide consultations with people across Plateau North, including constituents, political stakeholders, family members, and close associates. According to him, the switch was carefully considered and based on the need to reposition himself politically.
Mwadkwon described the defection as a calculated realignment aimed at improving cooperation with those currently in power at the national level.
He said, “This realignment is driven by the desire to work more effectively with leaders who share a commitment to improving governance and ensuring that the voices of our people are heard at key decision-making levels.”
He also revealed plans to seek Plateau North senatorial ticket on APC platform ahead of the 2027 general election, noting that his move was part of efforts to help grow and strengthen the ruling party in the state.
Welcoming him, Solomon Bature, chairman of the APC elders’ council in Barkin Ladi, said the party was open to Nigerians willing to align with its ideals. He described the defection as a boost to the party and urged members to remain loyal and committed.
Mwadkwon arrived with a large number of supporters, including former local government officials and party faithful, signalling what observers see as a potential shift in the political balance within the zone.
