African Union Commission (AUC) has praised the conduct of Uganda’s presidential election held on January 15 and congratulated President Yoweri Museveni on his return to office.
Gatekeepers News reports that Yoweri Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, recorded a decisive win in the election, securing 71.65 per cent of the vote based on official figures released by the electoral commission.
The victory extends his leadership into a seventh term. His closest rival, Bobi Wine, finished second with 24.72 per cent of the total votes cast.
In a statement, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf applauded the electoral process and confirmed that Museveni emerged victorious with 71.61 per cent of the votes.
“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulates H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.61% of the votes cast during the presidential elections held on 15 January 2026,” the statement said.
“The chairperson further reiterates the commitment of the African Union Commission to continue to support the promotion of democracy and effective governance on the continent, while applauding the people of Uganda for their commitment to consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development.”
Youssouf also acknowledged the role of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who led the joint African Union, COMESA, and IGAD Election Observation Mission to Uganda. He described Jonathan’s contribution to the exercise as providing sterling leadership.
The AUC Chairperson again affirmed the commission’s resolve to support democracy and good governance across Africa, while commending Ugandans for upholding democratic progress alongside peace, security, and development.
