Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State is set to become a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, January 26, 2026, after formally leaving New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) last Friday.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement released on Sunday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, said Yusuf’s decision was shaped by his political experience across several parties and the realities of governance, national cohesion, and development.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf first joined the APC in 2014 when he won the party’s primary for the Kano Central Senatorial seat before stepping aside for Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The Governor was quoted as saying that the APC is a familiar and well-structured platform for progressive governance, and that rejoining the party would improve cooperation with the Federal Government.
He also said that returning to the APC would help accelerate infrastructural development, strengthen security coordination, and improve service delivery across Kano State.
The statement added that the move is intended to consolidate political stability and unity in the state, which the Governor believes is in the best interest of the people of Kano.
Today, the Governor will formally register as an APC member in Kano alongside 22 members of the state House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
He is also expected to officially launch the APC e-registration exercise in Kano State during the event.
Meanwhile, the Governor’s resignation from the NNPP has sparked criticism from party officials, who described his exit as a betrayal of the trust placed in him by Kano people.
