President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded 24 bills aimed at reforming Nigeria’s health sector to the Senate for consideration.

Gatekeepers News reports that the bills were transmitted in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during plenary on Tuesday.

Tinubu explained that the proposals followed a comprehensive review of existing health laws conducted by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, in collaboration with the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, and were subsequently approved by Federal Executive Council.

According to the president, the bills are designed to streamline governance in health institutions, reduce bloated board memberships, and improve efficiency and service delivery across the sector.

They cover a wide range of health institutions and regulatory bodies, including tertiary and teaching hospitals, specialty hospitals, professional councils, and regulatory agencies.

Some of the key bills transmitted include amendments affecting the National Hospital for Women and Children, Federal Medical Centres, National Specialty Hospitals Management Board, Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board, National Eye Centre, National Ear Care Centre, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the National Blood Service Agency.

Tinubu also submitted additional legislative proposals, including the Records Officers Registration and Digital Health Bill 2025 and the Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Bill 2025.

The president expressed confidence that the Senate would give the bills thorough consideration to strengthen the nation’s health sector. Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred all 24 bills to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action.

These reforms are seen as part of Tinubu’s broader effort to modernise Nigeria’s healthcare system, enhance transparency in institutional governance, and ensure better access and quality of care for citizens.
