At least two civilians have been reported killed and several others wounded after a military helicopter, believed to be from the Nigerian Air Force, allegedly opened fire on people in the Kurgi community of Mariga LGA in Niger State on Sunday, January 25, 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that eyewitnesses say the aircraft hovered over the settlement before gunfire rang out, hitting residents who were going about their daily activities, including women and children, and causing widespread panic as people fled to nearby towns for safety.
Accounts from locals describe a distressing scene, with injured victims rushed to health facilities amid limited medical support, and farmlands and homes left deserted as families feared further attacks. Many residents called the assault “shocking and unprovoked” and urged authorities to investigate quickly and provide care for the injured.
In response to the reports, the Nigerian Air Force said it has activated its Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team to conduct an immediate inquiry into the incident and establish the facts.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, acknowledged the seriousness of the reported deaths and injuries and reaffirmed that civilian protection is central to the force’s operations.
The team will assess the situation under the service’s Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response – Action Plan, to improve procedures and safeguards where needed.
NAF also reiterated its commitment to professionalism and transparency, saying it will take responsibility if required and continue efforts to defend the nation while reducing harm to non-combatants.
