Defence officials from the United Kingdom and Germany have reiterated their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency, particularly in the North-East.
Gatekeepers News reports that Tom Harper, defence attaché of the United Kingdom, and Boris Bovecamp, his German counterpart, made the pledge during a visit to the headquarters of the north-east joint task force, Operation Hadin Kai, in Maiduguri.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (JTF), said the visiting defence officers reaffirmed their countries’ readiness to deepen collaboration with Nigeria in tackling terrorism.
According to Uba, Harper highlighted the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, underscoring their shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
He also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sustained efforts in combating terrorism in the North-East through Operation Hadin Kai.
Harper further expressed the UK’s willingness to expand training support via the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT), aimed at strengthening operational capacity.
Similarly, Bovecamp said Germany’s engagement would focus on identifying areas for future collaboration, particularly in capacity building and regional cooperation initiatives.
He noted that such interventions would enhance operational effectiveness and foster greater coordination in the fight against insurgency.
In his remarks, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Abdulsalam Abubakar, appreciated the foreign defence officers for their contributions to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign.
Abubakar said ongoing training initiatives have improved troops’ skills and readiness in responding to evolving security threats within the theatre of operations. He added that future collaboration could include technical expertise, as well as equipment and logistics support.
