University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has expelled 28 students over various acts of misconduct, including examination malpractice, cult-related activities, falsification of academic records, and other serious disciplinary violations.

Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was reached during the institution’s senate meeting and was communicated in a statement released on Sunday by Habib Yakoob, the acting director of information.

He said the action followed a careful review of the findings and recommendations submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC) after weeks of investigations.

According to Yakoob, the offences committed by the affected students ranged from examination malpractice, cultism, conspiracy, burglary, theft, and assault, to possession and use of hard drugs. Some of the students were also accused of threatening lives, engaging in violent conduct, and participating in cult-related operations within and outside the campus.

The university further revealed that several of the students falsified their ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the institution’s admission portal in a bid to secure entry. Others reportedly ignored multiple invitations to appear before the disciplinary committee to defend themselves, despite being served repeated notices.

In addition to the expulsions, the senate approved the withdrawal of academic certificates from 15 former students who failed to respond to the committee’s summons during the investigation process. Meanwhile, nine students were cleared of all allegations after a thorough scrutiny of their cases.

The senate also issued formal warnings to 33 students found guilty of lesser offences, including hostel racketeering, conspiracy, fighting, and other acts deemed contrary to the university’s code of conduct.

Reacting to the development, Vice-Chancellor Hakeem Fawehinmi reaffirmed the institution’s zero tolerance for misconduct, stressing that the university would continue to enforce discipline strictly in order to preserve academic integrity and ensure a safe learning environment. He said the institution remains committed to upholding its rules without compromise, adding that academic honesty remains non-negotiable.

Fawehinmi commended the Student Disciplinary Committee for its diligence and professionalism in handling the cases and urged students to conduct themselves responsibly, warning that any behaviour capable of undermining their academic future would attract severe sanctions.
