Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil giant, Saudi Aramco, has temporarily suspended operations at its strategic Ras Tanura oil refinery after a drone-related incident triggered a fire at the facility, further escalating tensions in the Middle East and raising concerns about global energy supply.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency, the disruption occurred after Saudi air defence systems intercepted two unmanned aerial vehicles near the refinery complex. Debris from the interception reportedly fell within the facility, igniting a limited fire in parts of the operational units.

Emergency response teams were immediately deployed, swiftly containing the blaze before it could spread or cause major structural damage.

Energy ministry officials confirmed that the refinery sustained only minor damage and that no injuries or fatalities were recorded. As a precautionary measure, some processing units were shut down temporarily to allow for safety checks, damage assessment, and necessary repairs.

Authorities stressed that the incident has not affected the supply of petroleum products to domestic markets, as contingency systems and strategic reserves remain in place to ensure uninterrupted distribution.

The Ras Tanura complex, located along Saudi Arabia’s eastern Gulf coast, is one of the largest and most critical oil processing hubs in the world, with a refining capacity of about 550,000 barrels per day. The facility also plays a central role in the kingdom’s crude export operations, making it a vital component of global energy infrastructure.

The attack comes amid rapidly intensifying hostilities in the region following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on key Iranian targets over the weekend.

Those strikes reportedly resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the country’s armed forces chief of staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi, alongside several members of Khamenei’s immediate family.

In retaliation, Iran launched a series of missile and drone attacks across multiple locations in the Middle East, including targets in Saudi Arabia, significantly heightening fears of a broader regional conflict. Security has since been tightened around major energy installations in the Gulf, with air defence systems placed on high alert.
