A 4.4 magnitude earthquake has been recorded in southern Iran.
Gatekeepers News reports that United States Geological Survey revealed that the tremor struck the Gerash area and occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometres beneath the surface.
Seismologists say earthquakes of this strength are usually considered light to moderate, but they can still be felt clearly by residents close to the epicentre.
Gerash is located within the Zagros fold and thrust belt, a highly active seismic zone formed by the ongoing collision between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This geological setting makes southern Iran one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the Middle East.
Although quakes in the magnitude-4 range are not unusual in that part of the country, the development comes at a tense moment.
Recall that Iran is currently facing sustained military strikes from Israel and the United States in an operation that started on Saturday, raising concerns over stability and safety in the region.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage following the earthquake. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation.
This is a developing story…
