Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 election, has formally become a member of African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Gatekeepers News reports that the former Anambra Governor completed his registration on Saturday at Agulu Ward 2 in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State during the launch of the party’s nationwide membership drive and mobilisation campaign.

The exercise is part of the ADC’s effort to expand its grassroots presence as political activities gradually build toward the next electoral cycle.

Speaking at the event, Obi criticised the recently enacted Electoral Act 2026 and disclosed that he plans to challenge the law in court. He alleged that the legislation was hurriedly passed and could be used to influence the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

According to him, certain provisions of the law appear to interfere with how political parties conduct their primary elections, insisting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not determine how parties select their candidates.

“All the laws being hurriedly churned out now are simply aimed at enabling them to snatch the 2027 presidential election and run away with it,” Obi said.

He added that INEC should concentrate on organising credible elections rather than interfering in the internal processes of political parties.

“But this time, we will catch them. We have seen all the reviews of the Electoral Act, and INEC has no reason to dictate how parties should elect their candidates,” he said.

“INEC should focus on how to conduct elections. They now choose to abandon their work as referee and then want to teach a coach how to select their players.”

Obi also criticised Nigeria’s leadership challenges, particularly in the power sector, noting that the country continues to struggle with electricity supply while political actors are focused on electoral manoeuvres.

He urged Nigerians to join the ADC in large numbers, stressing that the 2027 election would be a contest against what he described as bad leadership.

“We want to register as many people as possible because the election of 2027 will be against bad leadership,” he said.

The former Governor also noted that the south-east geopolitical zone is increasingly aligning politically, describing the region as working together like a family. He added that several notable figures from the region are already associated with the ADC.
