Four members of the House of Representatives have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), further strengthening the ruling party’s numbers in the lower chamber of the national assembly.
Gatekeepers News reports that the lawmakers who switched allegiance include Inuwa Garuba, representing Yamaltu/Deba federal constituency of Gombe state; Abdullahi El-Rasheed, representing Dakku/Nafada federal constituency of Gombe; and Mohammed Audu, who represents Karim Lamido/Lau/Ardo-Kola federal constituency of Taraba. The trio defected from the PDP to the APC.
Also joining the ruling party is Joshua Chinedu Obika, the lawmaker representing Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC)/Bwari federal constituency of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who defected from the Labour Party to the APC.
The defections were formally announced during plenary after the Speaker of the House of Representatives read letters from the affected lawmakers notifying the chamber of their decision to leave their former parties.
Political defections have continued to reshape the balance of power in the national assembly, with several opposition lawmakers in recent months citing internal party crises and political realignments as reasons for moving to the APC.
