Troops of the Nigerian Army, working with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have foiled an attempt to smuggle ammunition to bandits after arresting a female courier in Kano State.

Gatekeepers News reports that the suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Saturday following intelligence reports about the movement of illegal arms and ammunition through the state. Security operatives reportedly intercepted her around 3 a.m. during the operation.

According to security sources, the woman was found transporting 884 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, believed to be destined for bandits operating in Zamfara State. The ammunition was reportedly being moved from Plateau State through Kano.

The suspect was travelling with her 10-year-old daughter at the time of the arrest. Preliminary investigations indicated that she had been contracted by criminal elements to deliver the ammunition to Zamfara, an area heavily affected by banditry and armed violence.

Sources involved in the investigation also said the suspect allegedly admitted receiving ₦50,000 as an advance payment for the delivery and was promised additional payment after completing the mission. She reportedly confessed to carrying out similar assignments in the past.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect and the recovered ammunition have been handed over to the DSS for further investigation and possible prosecution as security agencies continue efforts to disrupt the supply of weapons to criminal groups in the north-west.
