The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Tuesday honoured 17 police officers killed during a terrorist attack in Yobe State, pledging that the Nigeria Police Force would remain resolute in the fight against terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
Gatekeepers News reports that the slain officers, all members of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), lost their lives during an attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area, in the early hours of May 8, 2026.
Despite heavy rainfall, the IGP attended the tribute ceremony where he described the officers as heroes who died defending the country and protecting citizens from insecurity.
“Today, we gather with heavy hearts but with immense pride to honour 17 gallant officers… who paid the supreme price in service to our dear nation,” Disu said while addressing journalists.
He described their sacrifice as the highest form of patriotism and duty, noting that police officers operating in the North-East alongside the military and other security agencies continue to work under extremely dangerous conditions.
According to the police chief, personnel deployed in the region remain committed to combating terrorism and violent extremism despite the risks involved.
“Our officers continue to put their lives on the line so that every Nigerian family can sleep at night with a measure of safety and peace,” he said.
Disu added that the nation owes a debt of gratitude to the fallen officers and their families.
“Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and we solemnly pledge that their deaths will not be in vain,” he stated.
The IGP also assured the families of the deceased officers that the police force would continue to support them during their period of grief.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to sustain operations against criminal elements across the country.
Prayers were later offered for the repose of the souls of the slain officers during the ceremony.
