PSG Defeat Arsenal On Penalties To Retain Champions League Title

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw after extra time in Saturday’s final in Budapest.

Gatekeepers News reports that Arsenal made the brighter start and took the lead through Kai Havertz, who finished off a well-worked move to hand the Premier League champions an early advantage. Mikel Arteta’s side maintained their defensive discipline for much of the contest and looked on course to claim the club’s first-ever Champions League title.

However, PSG fought their way back into the game in the second half after Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. Ousmane Dembélé calmly converted from the spot to level the score and shift momentum towards the French champions.

Neither side could find a winner during extra time despite several chances, sending the final into a penalty shootout. The decisive moment came when Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães blasted his spot-kick over the crossbar, allowing PSG to seal a 4-3 victory and retain Europe’s biggest club trophy.

The triumph makes PSG the first club since Real Madrid’s 2016-2018 run to successfully defend the Champions League title. It is also the second European crown for manager Luis Enrique with the Paris club, further cementing their rise as one of the dominant forces in European football.

Speaking after the match, PSG captain Marquinhos praised the team’s mentality and determination, noting that retaining the trophy was even more difficult than winning it for the first time. The victory sparked massive celebrations among supporters, with jubilant scenes reported across Paris following the final whistle.

For Arsenal, the defeat ended a remarkable European campaign in heartbreak despite winning the Premier League title this season. The London club remains in search of its first Champions League trophy, with Arteta urging his players to use the disappointment as motivation for future campaigns.
