There was mild tension at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos on Friday after protesters affiliated with the #EndBadGovernance movement and a pro-government group gathered at the same location during Democracy Day demonstrations.
Gatekeepers News reports that the #EndBadGovernance protesters, including activists and civil society groups, assembled to draw attention to worsening insecurity, economic hardship and governance concerns. At the same time, supporters of the administration also staged a rally at the venue to express support for government policies and counter criticisms from the opposition.
Witnesses said both groups exchanged chants and slogans, leading to a brief confrontation before security personnel intervened to prevent the situation from escalating. The presence of police officers and other security operatives helped maintain order as the demonstrations continued.
The protest formed part of nationwide Democracy Day activities, with participants using the occasion to express differing views on the state of the nation. While the #EndBadGovernance demonstrators called for urgent action on insecurity and the rising cost of living, the pro-government group argued that the administration should be given more time to implement reforms and address economic challenges.
Despite the tension, no major injuries or arrests were reported at the venue. Security agencies remained on the ground to monitor the situation and ensure that both groups exercised their rights peacefully.
The incident highlighted the growing divide in public opinion over the country’s economic and security situation, as Nigerians continue to debate the impact of ongoing government reforms and the pace of improvements in living conditions.
