Democracy Day: Tinubu Urges Young Nigerians To Build Their Future At Home

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on young Nigerians to remain in the country and play active roles in its development, saying the nation’s future depends on the contributions of its youthful population.

Gatekeepers News reports that speaking during his Democracy Day address on June 12, Tinubu encouraged young people to channel their talents, skills and creativity into nation-building rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

“Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here,” Tinubu said.

The President described the appeal as both a patriotic duty and a practical pathway for the country’s growing population of innovators, entrepreneurs and technology professionals.

“Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship,” he added.

Tinubu acknowledged that Nigeria’s democratic journey has not been without challenges but noted that the country has continued to record peaceful transfers of power and resolve political disputes through democratic institutions rather than unconstitutional means.

The President said his administration remains committed to implementing reforms aimed at strengthening the economy, expanding opportunities and improving the living conditions of citizens. He pointed to ongoing investments in infrastructure, agriculture, technology, education and social welfare programmes as part of efforts to reposition the country for long-term growth.

Reflecting on the country’s democratic history, Tinubu said each generation has a unique responsibility in advancing national development.

“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity,” he said.

The President also urged Nigerians to remain united despite ethnic, religious and political differences, stressing that diversity should be seen as a source of strength rather than division.

“Let us move forward together—rejecting division, cynicism, and despair; embracing unity, hope, and confidence.

“Let us build a Nigeria united by a common purpose, strengthened by diversity, where justice is accessible, liberty is secure, and opportunity is abundant.”

Tinubu further stated that Nigeria’s diversity has become one of the pillars sustaining its democracy and called on citizens to support efforts to deepen national cohesion and economic progress.

The Democracy Day address formed part of activities commemorating the June 12 struggle and Nigeria’s democratic evolution. The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a more prosperous, stable and inclusive nation while urging citizens to remain hopeful about the country’s future.
