Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has approved the constitution of governing councils for several state-owned tertiary institutions as part of efforts to strengthen administration, improve oversight and enhance the quality of higher education across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the appointments, announced in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Publicity to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, affect key institutions including the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Shehu Shagari College of Education, Shehu Shagari University of Education, College of Agriculture Wurno, Sultan Abdul Rahman College of Health Technology Gwadabawa, College of Legal and Islamic Studies and the College of Nursing Science, Tambuwal.
Among those appointed are Alhaji Yusha’u Kebbe, who will chair the governing council of the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Aminu Salihu Mikailu as chairman of the Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic council, Ambassador Sahabi Isah Gada as chairman of the Shehu Shagari College of Education council, and Professor G.V. Ardo as chairman of the governing council of the Shehu Shagari University of Education.
Others include Alhaji Yusuf Jega, who will head the governing council of the College of Agriculture, Wurno; Alhaji Yusuf Muhammad Goronyo for the Sultan Abdul Rahman College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa; Justice Ladan Buda Tsamiya for the College of Legal and Islamic Studies; and Professor Hamza Muhammad Maishanu for the College of Nursing Science, Tambuwal.
The councils comprise academics, government officials, representatives of professional bodies, labour unions and institutional management teams. They are expected to provide policy direction, strengthen governance and support the development of their respective institutions.
In a related development, Governor Aliyu also approved the appointment of Muhammad Hamim Nuhu Sanusi, the Emir of Dutse, as Pro-Chancellor of Sokoto State University.
According to the statement, all appointments take immediate effect.
