National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 45-year-old suspect, identified as Ali Adamu, after operatives recovered more than one metric tonne of cannabis sativa during a raid in Taraba State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the operation was carried out in Maihula town, Bali Local Government Area, following intelligence reports on illicit drug activities in the area.
According to the agency, officers searched a warehouse linked to the suspect and discovered 63 jumbo bags of cannabis weighing 1,121.5 kilograms. The seized substance is equivalent to over 1.1 metric tonnes, making it one of the largest cannabis recoveries recorded by the Taraba State Command.
The Taraba State Commander of the NDLEA, Javanson Kwalma, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the agency’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.
He said the seizure prevented a large quantity of illicit drugs from reaching communities and exposing residents, particularly young people, to harmful substances.
Kwalma added that the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue to uncover the source of the consignment and identify other individuals connected to the operation. He said the suspect would be prosecuted after the investigation is concluded.
The commander also commended the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Mohammed Buba Marwa, as well as the Taraba State Government, security agencies and members of the public for their support and intelligence-sharing efforts.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and reducing the availability of illicit substances across the state.
