Court Orders Sowore’s Remand In Kuje Correctional Centre

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Gatekeepers News reports that the court’s ruling follows itd revocation of his bail in an ongoing case involving alleged defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu.

Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore’s remand on Monday and directed that he remain in custody until Wednesday. The court also dismissed an application in which Sowore sought the judge’s withdrawal from the case.

The activist is facing charges instituted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over comments in which he allegedly described the President as a “criminal.”

During proceedings, Sowore represented himself after his legal team withdrew from the matter, citing what they described as hostility and unfair treatment during the trial.

Sowore told the court that he had requested an adjournment to enable him secure new legal representation.

Following the ruling, he criticised the remand order, arguing that his absence from a previous court sitting was due to consultations with a new legal team.
