National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with a total of 186,291 candidates registered for the examination across Nigeria and selected foreign centres.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to the examination body, candidates sat for 12 subjects and were drawn from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five foreign countries.
The examination commenced on April 20, 2026, and concluded successfully on April 30, 2026.
NECO announced that the results were approved and released following the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairperson of the Award Committee and Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folake David, who represented the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination and the processes that facilitated the timely release of the results.
The meeting was attended by secondary school principals from across the country, as well as members of NECO’s management team.
Meanwhile, the Award Committee approved July 22 and July 23, 2026, for the conduct of the BECE Re-sit Examination in Mathematics and English Studies.
NECO explained that the re-sit examination is intended for candidates with conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both subjects.
According to the council, the exercise will enable affected candidates to address their deficiencies and obtain the qualifications required for admission and placement into Senior Secondary School One (SSS I) without having to repeat an academic session.
The examination body reaffirmed its commitment to upholding credible assessment standards while providing eligible candidates with opportunities to advance in their educational pursuits.
