Police Rescue Worshippers Kidnapped During Ekiti Church Vigil

Nigeria Police Force has rescued worshippers who were abducted during a deadly attack on a vigil at a Christ Apostolic Church prayer ground in Eda-Oniyo, Ekiti State, more than two months after the incident.

Gatekeepers News reports that the worshippers were kidnapped on April 28, 2026, when about five armed men invaded the overnight prayer gathering, fatally shot the church pastor and whisked several members into the forest. The attack sparked widespread concern over insecurity in the area.

Police spokesperson Sunday Abutu said the victims regained their freedom following sustained intelligence-led operations carried out by the police in collaboration with the military, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters, other security agencies and the Ekiti State Government.

According to the police, no ransom was paid for the victims’ release. The rescued worshippers have since been reunited with their families and are receiving medical attention and counselling after spending about 67 days in captivity.

Security agencies also said efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the attack and ensure they face justice.
