Nigerian troops have successfully repelled a terrorist attack on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mayanchi, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, forcing the assailants to retreat after a fierce gun battle.

Gatekeepers News reports that the attack occurred on Sunday evening when heavily armed terrorists attempted to overrun the military facility.

Military sources said the troops responded swiftly with superior firepower, frustrating the terrorists’ attempt to breach the base. The attackers reportedly suffered casualties during the exchange, although the exact number of those killed or injured has not been disclosed. Security personnel also recovered weapons and other items abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.

According to the report, the successful defence of the base prevented what could have been a major security breach in the area. Reinforcements were later deployed to strengthen security around the facility, while troops launched clearance operations to track down the fleeing terrorists and prevent further attacks.

The attempted assault is the latest in a series of attacks targeting military formations in Zamfara, where security forces have intensified operations against armed groups operating across the North-West.

The military has maintained that ongoing offensives under Operation Fansan Yamma are aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts and restoring peace in the region.
