Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi has become the first Nigerian to win the men’s 400 metres gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after producing a sensational performance in Glasgow, Scotland.
Gatekeepers News reports that the 20-year-old sprinter crossed the finish line in 44.25 seconds to secure the historic victory, narrowly missing the Commonwealth Games record of 44.24 seconds set by Grenada’s Kirani James in 2014 by just 0.01 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards claimed the silver medal in 44.82 seconds, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene settled for bronze with a time of 45.21 seconds.
Ogazi’s triumph marks Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s 400m at the Commonwealth Games. Before his achievement, the country’s best result in the event came in 1994, when the late Sunday Bada won bronze.
Nigeria also celebrated another podium finish in the women’s 400m, with Ella Onojuvwevwo winning the bronze medal in 51.00 seconds. Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley took gold, while Barbados’ Sada Williams finished second to claim silver.
The latest victories further boosted Nigeria’s medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, strengthening the country’s campaign as it continues to compete for more honours in Glasgow.
