Federal Government has commenced engagement with Israeli and French manufacturers for the production of two next-generation communication satellites for Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that the satellites, known as NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B, are expected to be delivered by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Thales Alenia Space of France. (TheCable)
The development followed the Federal Executive Council’s approval for the acquisition and deployment of the satellites, moving the project into its next phase.
According to the Nigeria Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited, the next stage involves formal engagement with the technology partners, contract finalisation and technical planning ahead of the manufacture, launch and deployment of the satellites. (TheCable)
Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, described the approval as a significant milestone for the country and the satellite company.
She said the project would strengthen Nigeria’s national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communication services.
The new satellites are expected to provide additional capacity for high-capacity broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity, government services and other emerging digital applications. (ThisDayLive)
Stephen Kwande, Actinginh Head of NIGCOMSAT’s Corporate Affairs Division, said the launches would be carried out in two phases. The first is expected by the end of 2028, while the second is projected for 2029 or 2030.
Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy is handling the discussions and working with NIGCOMSAT on the engagement with the manufacturers.
NIGCOMSAT said the satellites would be deployed under the supervision of the ministry as part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and improve access to reliable communication services.
The project is also expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global satellite and digital economy while supporting broadband connectivity, particularly in areas underserved by conventional telecommunications infrastructure.
