Sahara Power Enterprise Group (SPEG) has commenced construction of a $12 million, 12-megawatt (MW) gas-fired Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ogba, Lagos, as part of efforts to improve electricity supply across the area.
Gatekeepers News reports that the project, located at the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric Plc, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
According to TheCable, the plant will consist of six 2MW gas-fired generating units and will supply electricity to industrial clusters, businesses, residential communities and public institutions in Ogba, Acme Road, Wemco Road and surrounding areas.
Kola Adesina, group managing director of SPEG, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to providing more reliable electricity to consumers.
“This initiative is about much more than breaking ground for a new power plant. It represents a bold commitment to Nigeria’s energy future and our determination to deliver dependable, efficient, and sustainable electricity to businesses and communities,” Adesina said.
He added that improved power availability and reliability would help boost productivity, economic growth and value creation.
The project is being developed in partnership with Ikeja Electric, while Cummins West Africa Limited is undertaking the construction of the power plant. Ikeja Electric said the investment would support efforts to improve customer experience and electricity reliability across its network.
The plant is expected to provide additional generation capacity to key commercial and residential areas in Lagos and reduce pressure on existing electricity sources.
