Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) have directed their members in Ondo State-owned universities to commence an indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and the non-implementation of an agreement with the Federal Government.
Gatekeepers News reports that the industrial action is expected to begin on Wednesday and affects the three state-owned universities in Ondo State: Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, and the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.
The unions are demanding the implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and university-based unions, as well as payment of outstanding allowances owed their members.
The development follows a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Ondo State Government over the unresolved demands. The unions said the government had failed to address the issues despite engagements.
Their action comes amid a wider dispute over the implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and university staff unions. ASUU chapters in some Ondo universities have also embarked on industrial action over unpaid salaries, allowances and the implementation of the 2025 agreement.
The unions have directed their members to withdraw their services until their demands are satisfactorily addressed, raising concerns over the disruption of academic and administrative activities across the affected institutions.
