Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has explained why he helped connect comedian and content creator Isbae U with former President Olusegun Obasanjo for an episode of Curiosity Made Me Ask.
Gatekeepers News reports that Charly Boy disclosed this in a post on X while reflecting on Obasanjo’s appearance on the popular YouTube interview programme. He said the connection was intended to give a young content creator an opportunity to engage with an older generation.
According to him, giving young people opportunities could be more valuable than giving them money, pointing to the interaction between Isbae U and Obasanjo as an example.
“Sometimes, the greatest thing you fit give a young person no be money. Na opportunity. Look at wetin happen when Baba entered Bae U’s world,” Charly Boy said.
He said Obasanjo, despite his age and experience, was willing to enter the unconventional world of the young content creator and participate in the show’s humour and banter.
“A man of his age and experience sat down with a young man whose style dey completely different from wetin he is used to. Baba no just sit there looking serious. He matched the energy, played along and showed Nigerians another side of himself,” he said.
Charly Boy then disclosed that he was responsible for facilitating the meeting between the former president and Isbae U.
“And who helped make that connection happen? CharlyBoy. Fada believed in the young people behind that show enough to pull Baba into their space,” he said.
Obasanjo’s appearance on the programme attracted attention because of the contrast between his background as a former president and Isbae U’s informal, comedy-driven interview style. During the episode, the former president joined in the banter and discussed Nigerian entertainers and personalities he knew or did not know.
The conversation also touched on Charly Boy, with Obasanjo recounting how his perception of the entertainer changed after witnessing the care he provided for his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, and later his mother.
Obasanjo said he initially had little regard for Charly Boy but changed his view after seeing how devotedly he cared for his parents. He also described Charly Boy as intelligent for turning his unconventional public persona into a means of making a living.
Charly Boy’s comments have added another dimension to the widely discussed interview, highlighting the role he played in bringing together the former president and the younger generation represented by Isbae U.
