Driver Escapes Unhurt As Train Crushes Car At Lagos Railway Crossing

A 55-year-old driver has escaped without injury after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway intersection in Lagos State.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred on Friday morning, October 9, involving a train travelling towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT.

Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the incident in a statement.

According to the agency, the collision extensively damaged the vehicle, which was left virtually beyond repair. However, no casualty was recorded at the scene.

“Notwithstanding the severity of the impact and the considerable destruction sustained by the vehicle, the motorist miraculously escaped without any reported injury, with no casualty recorded at the scene,” the statement said.

LASTMA operatives and security personnel responded to the incident, rescued the driver and facilitated the removal of the wrecked vehicle from the railway track.

The agency said the intervention allowed the train to continue its journey towards Agege after the obstruction had been cleared.

“Their timely and coordinated intervention was instrumental in clearing the obstruction and enabling the train to resume its journey towards Agege,” LASTMA said.

Despite the removal of the damaged car, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis, affecting motorists travelling through the area.

The wrecked vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel for investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. The cause of the incident had not been established in the initial report.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s operatives and security personnel for their response and urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching railway crossings.

He warned drivers against attempting to cross railway tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion.

“The Authority maintains that the preservation of human life must remain paramount in all road-use decisions,” the agency said.

The incident has again drawn attention to safety at the PWD railway crossing, where previous train-related accidents have resulted in fatalities.

In March 2023, a train collided with a Lagos State Government staff bus at the PWD railway crossing, killing six people and injuring several others.
