Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected calls for its candidates to support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, describing the move as an attempt to weaken the opposition.
Gatekeepers News reports that the party stated this in a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Ini Ememobong, on October 20, 2026.
The statement followed remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, urging PDP candidates to collapse their political structures and support Tinubu’s re-election.
The PDP said the message was not directed at genuine members of the party but at individuals it described as pretenders in the opposition who were working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
It maintained that the responsibility of opposition parties was to provide an alternative to the incumbent government rather than support its re-election.
The party also opposed the idea of a broad political alliance involving opposition figures and the ruling party, warning that such an arrangement could undermine electoral democracy and weaken political competition.
The PDP urged its members to remain committed to the party while awaiting a ruling by the Court of Appeal in its ongoing leadership dispute.
According to the statement, the party’s case had been heard, and it was awaiting the court’s decision, which it said would return the party to its rightful owners.
The party further cautioned Nigerians against what it described as elite accommodation and state capture disguised as broad-based political collaboration.
It called on voters to use the 2027 general election to vote out political leaders it accused of pursuing insensitive and irresponsible policies.
The statement reaffirmed PDP’s position that it would not support Tinubu’s re-election, insisting that the opposition should remain committed to offering Nigerians an alternative to the APC-led government.
