The Federal Government has said the patient diagnosed with Ebola in Nigeria is showing signs of recovery, adding that there is currently no evidence of community transmission.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Ministry of Health disclosed this on Friday in an update on the country’s Ebola response posted on X.
According to the ministry, contact tracing, quarantine and monitoring are ongoing, alongside efforts to strengthen health facility preparedness and improve coordination of the national response.
The update came two days after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported that the patient, a Ugandan-born woman infected with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, had developed multiple organ failure.
“The Federal Government has provided an update on the confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria, reporting that the patient is showing signs of recovery. There is currently no evidence of community spread,” the ministry said.
“Contact tracing, quarantine and monitoring continue, alongside strengthened national coordination, health facility preparedness and public health measures.
“Nigerians are encouraged to follow recommended precautions, rely on information from recognised health authorities and avoid sharing unverified reports.”
Nigeria confirmed the case on October 20 after laboratory tests detected the virus in the woman, who had received treatment at a private hospital in Abuja.
Patient’s Nationality, Travel History Under Investigation
The case has generated differing accounts of the patient’s nationality and travel history.
While Ugandan authorities initially described her as Nigerian, Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), said she was born in Uganda.
On Thursday, Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs identified the patient as the Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja and said she was believed to have contracted the virus during a trip to Uganda.
The Swiss authorities added that her husband, who travelled with her, was in isolation but had not developed symptoms.
The source of the infection remains under investigation, with health authorities examining the patient’s travel history and possible exposure to the virus.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has urged Nigerians to observe recommended public health precautions, obtain information from recognised health authorities and avoid circulating unverified reports as efforts to contain the outbreak continue.
