JUST IN: Tenure Extension For Abuja Council Chairmen Sparks Protest

Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja have taken to the streets to protest the tenure extension of six area councils’ chairmen and councillors.

Gatekeepers News reports that the tenure of affected chairmen and councillors had elapsed on Thursday and the newly-elected officials were supposed to be sworn in today – Friday.

However, the FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, while citing a court judgement, extended the officials’ tenure by one year.

Residents of the Gwagwalada Area Council who were displeased by this have therefore taken to the streets to protest.

The residents, who barricaded the roads and made bonfires, are demanding a reversal of the decision.
