Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawan at the weekend advised wives of Policemen to desist  from allowing their girl-child and teenagers to hawk groceries within the Barracks and Police Headquarters.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Commissioner of Police said the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) and others  should ensure adequate education of the girl-child and make them contribute meaningfully to the society.

This was disclosed in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, during the distribution of palliatives to 100 POWA  vulnarable members, particularly widows of late personnel who paid the supreme price of service to their fatherland.

According to the Commissioner of Police, the education of the girl child should be the top priority of every POWA member and hawking by girl-child should be discouraged by right thinking members of the society.

“For our Women,  POWA , PWA , and LPW, my advice is for you to educate the girl-child. This phenomenon of allowing  our daughters, teenagers go all over the places in the Barracks and the Police Headquarters hawking , you’re killing a generation.

“We need to build this generation, the women; the future belongs to you. Even during our general elections, the vote of women is enormous. For example, here in Borno State, the government is very passionate about the girl child; they have laws that bans street begging and hawking.

“All these are not done as punitive measures  but to encourage parents to enrol their children into schools.  We (The Police ) must not be onlookers, let us key in so that the  future of our girls can be assured.”

At the end of the occasion, each of the 100 beneficiaries went home with a 50kg of rice and other food items.
