Less than two weeks after a building collapse at the Oduigbo section of the Ochanja market in Onitsha, a five-storey building collapsed on Garden Street Fegge, Onitsha, Anambra State on Sunday morning.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Chairman of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Chike Mmaduekwe, confirmed the incident, noting that while the collapse was partial, thankfully, no lives were lost.
Mmaduekwe revealed that the approval for the building was for a three-storey structure, but the developer had exceeded the plan by constructing five storeys. The building was intended for commercial use upon completion.
An excavator has been deployed to the site to clear the rubble and potentially rescue any trapped individuals.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo had previously warned developers to obtain necessary approvals and comply with construction regulations to prevent loss of lives and property.
He had ordered all buildings erected without approvals in the state to be demolished and this collapsed building will not be an exception as repeated contravention notices were served the developer who remained adamant.
