Minister of State for Health in Nigeria, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has called for a complete halt in the importation of medical syringes into the country.

Gatekeepers News reports that the aim of this move is to boost the nation’s economy and promote local production.

During a visit to the Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Limited Syringe factory in Ogun State, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, supported this initiative to tackle the prevalent problem of substandard medical device imports and promote indigenous manufacturing.

Dr. Alausa emphasized the need to revamp syringe production within Nigeria to ensure high-quality products and create employment opportunities.

This demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthen local industries.

In line with this, Prof. Adeyeye reiterated NAFDAC’s resolve to cease issuing import authorisations for syringes, with a focus on supporting local manufacturers while collaborating with them to improve production standards.

Although locally manufactured syringes may initially cost more, Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that scaling up production volumes would lead to a reduction in prices over time.

This move not only ensures quality control but also strengthens the nation’s capacity for self-sufficiency in critical healthcare supplies. It also aligns with broader efforts to advance Nigeria’s economic interests.
