Head of Jovenel Moise’s security team, Jean Laguel Civil was arrested by the Haitian Police on Monday in connection with the ongoing investigation into the president’s assassination.
Gatekeepers News reports that the security chief is suspected to be involved in the July 7 plot that saw Moise killed at his home in the middle of the night by armed commandos who bypassed the president’s guards without firing a shot.
“I can confirm that Jean Laguel Civil was arrested Monday by police as part of the investigation into the assassination of president Jovenel Moise,” police spokeswoman Marie Michelle Verrier told the AFP news agency.
Civil’s lawyer, Reynold Georges, also confirmed his arrest to The Associated Press news agency on Monday, saying his client’s arrest was politically motivated.
Gatekeepers News gathered that Civil has been placed in solitary confinement at a prison in Delmas, near the capital, Port-au-Prince, but it is not immediately clear if he has been charged with an offence.
Meanwhile, Port-au-Prince Commissioner, Bed-Ford Claude has ordered immigration authorities to prevent four police officers who were in charge of Moise’s security from leaving the country.
On Monday, Police also issued a warrant for Wendelle Coq Thelot, a judge for the highest court in the country who Moise had fired.
As details of Moise’s assassination remain unclear, the newly installed Prime Minister Ariel Henry has promised to bring the President’s killers to justice.
