Three American citizens have been identified among the suspects arrested for attempting a coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the failed coup involved both Congolese and foreign nationals, including the three Americans, according to DRC army spokesperson Sylvain Ekenge.
“The foreigners and Congolese have been put out of action, including their leader,” Ekenge said, adding that several suspects were detained and the situation is now under control.
US Ambassador to the DRC Lucy Tamlyn expressed shock and concern over the involvement of American citizens, saying, “Please be assured that we will cooperate with the DRC authorities to the fullest extent as they investigate these criminal acts and hold accountable any US citizen involved in criminal acts.”
The coup attempt occurred just hours after armed men attacked the residence of Vital Kamerhe, a former Chief of Staff and close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi. The attack left three people dead.
