The Citizens Advocacy for Social & Economic Rights (CASER) has reaffirmed its support for genetically modified organisms (GMOs), citing their safety and benefits for Nigeria’s development.
Gatekeepers News reports that this comes in response to the recent call by the House of Representatives to review the introduction of GMOs in the country.
According to CASER’s Executive Director, Frank Tietie, misinformation about GMOs has spread rapidly, fueled by conspiracy theories and commercial interests.
He emphasized that GMO foods have been consumed globally for over 30 years without scientific evidence of adverse effects on human health, animals, and the environment.
Tietie urged scientists, technologists, and government officials to educate the public about the safety and benefits of GMOs, which are essential for food security and national development.
He encouraged maximizing the opportunity presented by the House of Representatives’ call to review GMOs, to set the record straight and promote the safe application of biotechnology.
CASER has adopted the safe application of biotechnology as part of its mandate to promote the human right to food and improve living standards in Nigeria.
By advocating for GMO acceptance, CASER aims to counter misinformation and promote evidence-based decision-making.
