A faction of the Labour Party (LP), led by Callistus Okafor, has rejected the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee, describing it as “illegal.”
Gatekeepers News reports that the committee was established following a stakeholders meeting convened by Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
Okafor, in a statement, challenged Otti to produce a letter from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) acknowledging the meeting.
“Article 11 of the 2009 Constitution… categorically stated the four (4) organizations of the party; ward, local government area, state and national,” Okafor said. “Both Dr. Alex Otti and Mr. Peter Obi do not have the constitutional authority to convene any meeting of the party.”
He further stated, “We challenge Dr. Alex Otti to produce the official letter addressed to him from the Independent Electoral Commission on the aforementioned subject matter. Therefore, the outcome of the Umuahia gathering remains NULL AND VOID.”
Okafor emphasised his faction’s commitment to reconciling all members and groups, conducting inclusive congresses, and achieving a unified Labour Party.
