The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is set to embark on a new academic chapter under the leadership of its freshly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie, SAN.
Gatekeepers News reports that he steps into this prestigious role as the 11th substantive Vice-Chancellor in the university’s history, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in law, governance, and academia.
Born and raised in Nigeria, Professor Omoregie has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to education and legal scholarship. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992 after receiving his legal education at the University of Benin and the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos. His journey in academia began shortly thereafter, when he began lecturing in the Faculty of Law at UNIBEN in January 1998, where he has continued to inspire countless students over the course of more than two decades.
Professor Omoregie holds a PhD in Comparative Constitutional Law, with a specialization in Federalism and Governance. This diverse academic background has equipped him with a unique perspective on the intricate relationship between law, legislative processes, and democratic governance. For more than a decade, he has shared his expertise in Legislative Drafting and Process, Legislative Studies, and the Electoral Legal and Regulatory Framework at the postgraduate level in programs organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with UNIBEN.
In addition to his academic appointments, Professor Omoregie has been serving as the Director of Legislative Support Services at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies since October 2019. His leadership in this capacity reflects his commitment to enhancing legislative processes and governance in Nigeria.
A prolific writer, Professor Omoregie’s research and publications have earned him recognition both in Nigeria and internationally. His contributions to legal scholarship have been featured in various academic platforms, solidifying his position as a respected voice in the field. He is an active member of several eminent organizations, including the International Bar Association, the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel, the International Association of Legislation, and the Federal Union, which speaks to his engagement with global legislative conversations.
