The Senate has confirmed Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (COAS)
Gatekeepers News reports that this followed review of a report submitted by the Senate Committee on Army, led by its chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua during plenary.
Yar’Adua noted that the committee screened Oluyede on November 26 in his capacity as Acting Chief of Army Staff, adding that he was deemed highly qualified and met all the necessary criteria for the position.
The confirmation was unanimously reached after all senators present endorsed the appointment during the Committee of the Whole’s deliberations.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio while speaking, expressed confidence in Oluyede’s ability to address the nation’s rising security challenges, especially the activities of terrorists and bandits.
He extended his condolences over the passing of the former COAS, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja and prayed for continued repose of his soul.
Recall that Tinubu had initially appointed Oluyede as Acting COA on October 30, following the illness and subsequent demise of Lagbaja.
Last week, Tinubu requested the Senate’s confirmation of Oluyede’s appointment, citing constitutional provisions under Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act.
