Gatekeepers News reports that this was contained in a statement signed by the Director-General, Mr. Mohammed Osman, the coalition noted that the tragic incident destroyed the livelihoods of hardworking citizens of Edo State.
The coalition highlighted the alarming neglect of basic governance responsibilities by successive political leaders in the region.
“The lack of a functional firefighting service is a glaring indictment of leadership, particularly given the area’s history of producing high-ranking officials,” the statement read.
“We commiserate with His Royal Highness, the Ogieneni of Uzairue, on this unfortunate incident and share in his sadness and concern for the welfare of his people.”
The coalition condemned the systemic disregard for the welfare and safety of the people, which has led to this and other incidents. Osman emphasized that the Jattu fire outbreak serves as a painful reminder of the broader infrastructural decay in Etsako West, including:
– Lack of potable water
– Erratic electricity supply
– Crumbling schools
– Rising insecurity
The Afenmai Coalition demands immediate and decisive action to address these shortcomings. “We call on the authorities to establish a functional fire service unit without delay and conduct a comprehensive reassessment of public infrastructure in Etsako West,” Osman said.
The coalition urged leaders in Edo North to rise above partisan politics and prioritize the safety and welfare of the people they were elected to serve. “Enough is enough – our people deserve better governance and the infrastructure to protect their lives and livelihoods.”
