Jennifer, the Nigerian woman who trended after a viral courtroom video showed her being sentenced for failing to honor a man’s request after receiving transport money, has spoken out about her side of the story.
Gatekeepers News reports that in the viral clip, Jennifer was seen receiving a seven-year jail sentence with an option of paying a N450,000 fine after Emmanuel, a man she met online, accused her of collecting N50,000 for transportation but failing to show up.
Speaking in a follow-up video, Jennifer explained how the issue began. She revealed that despite her friendship with Emmanuel, they had never met in person.
According to her, Emmanuel wanted her to travel from Asaba to Abuja, but she insisted he should come to her first since they had no physical history together.
She recounted that Emmanuel disagreed, saying he could not visit a woman. Despite this, he later transferred N50,000 to her account with a message that it was for her transport and that she was expected to come the next day. Jennifer, however, dismissed the gesture.
She said, “I will just make this very short because this whole thing is circulating on the internet… So I will just cut the whole sob story and make it very short. Emmanuel sent me money for transportation so that he could see me, but he is a friend I met online, so I do not really know him, and I have never met him in person.”
“So before Emmanuel sent that money to me, I told him to come over to my city first, but he said no, that he could not go to visit a woman. Later, he told me he wanted me to come over, but I also told him that I could not come visit a man I did not really know and had never met before. Out of the blue, this guy just sent me N50,000 with a text message that this was my transportation and he wanted to see me the next day.”
Jennifer added that she had ignored both the payment and Emmanuel’s messages asking why she had not arrived. Soon after, she began receiving threats from his friends. Alarmed by the calls, she tried to return the money.
She said, “Like you are doing alpha male for me with N50,000? What should I use N50,000 for? So I just ignored him and did not reply to that message. The following day, he sent me another message asking why I was not there yet, but I also ignored.”
“Before I knew it, I started getting calls and threats from people, his friends. I do not know who he gave my number but they kept threatening me that their friend sent me money.”
“When I started getting calls from all these people, I then reached out to him that I am no longer comfortable with what is going on and that he should send his account number let me forward the money to him.”
“He said no, just glared up and started sending some kind of messages. He was so angry, and he said a lot of things that I would not like to say here.”
“After two days, I reached out again and I told him that now that you have sent this money, you know it would not be enough, and you do not want to send your account number so I can refund, come to my city instead.”
Jennifer confirmed that the matter was eventually resolved after she paid the fine.
She said, “ I do not want to say much about this issue because the whole case has been sorted out. I gave him the N450,000. Obviously, it is nothing to me, that is why I was surprised when he sent N50,000 for transport.”
