Sokoto State Executive Council has approved N8.5 billion for the full reconstruction and rehabilitation of sections of the Sokoto Central Market destroyed by fire in 2021.
Gatekeepers News reports that the approval was announced after a council meeting, with the government noting that despite years of delays marked by awarded contracts and donations, the market had remained unreconstructed.
The administration noted that it opted for immediate action following consultations with stakeholders.
According to the council, 38 contractors drawn from the local business community have been engaged for the project, with 50 per cent of the contract sum released upfront to ensure prompt mobilisation. The reconstruction is expected to be completed within three months.
The council also approved the construction of a new administrative block and rehabilitation works at the Pilgrims Welfare Agency. In addition, the 2026 proposed budget has been transmitted to the Sokoto State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.
The government said the approvals reflect its commitment to rebuilding critical infrastructure, modernising public institutions, and restoring confidence among traders, workers, and residents of the state.
